Festival : 2017 Dalgubeol Marrymaking at the Daegu Lantern Festival in Duryu Park

Merrymaking at the Daegu
Lantern Festival in Duryu Park!

This was our first visit so we were not sure what to expect. We did not want to be in the stadium so we settled for some space next to the sidewalk above the stadium. We just relaxed and watched the stadium fill up and more people coming into the park!

While there were music and shows on the main stage people were putting their lanterns together and enjoying picnics before the pace of people arriving and shows on stage picked up.

As the ceremony proceeded and the sun set a lovely quiet rolled over the crowd as the first lantern came up from the stadium floor.  At first, it was “Oohs.” and “Ahhs.” coming from the crowd.

Then there were more lanterns coming into view.  We could feel the excitement growing with every lantern we saw take to the skies. It was slow at first. But then we saw more and more! Then we saw more take flight as the crowd began to get more and more excited.  It really was a sight to see. I repositioned to get a different angle and I realized the crowd behind us was moving this way and that.  It was difficult to get a good photo.

Finally the sky was filled with floating lanterns!  It really was beautiful to see.  We will be back next year to take part in this huge and wonderful festival!

Better together : Mabijeong Mural Village with Daegu Better together

Mabijeong Mural Village with Better together

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Min Hee joined the group Better together at the Daegu Art Factory. Two buses of people headed out to explore some of what Daegu has to offer. In the afternoon they went to Mabijeong Mural Village. It is a beautiful village in the south western part of Daegu. The village is filled with old homes, history, kind residents and quite a few lively murals. There are several trees that are well over 250 years old.

On this day, the parking lot was filled and as we gathered together there were many smiling faces from so many places in the world. It was a beautiful sight to see. Everyone was eager to see what the village had in store for us today.

At the first small intersection there is a table with pens and strips of paper. Here you can write a wish, then wrap the paper or fold it and tuck it into the wall. Oh, the wishes can be written in any language. The group surrounding Min Hee was a very diverse group!

We were in for a special treat. The group was taught how to make tofu from beans to tasting. Several members were asked to grind the bean sprout heads and water, to get things going. It was great to see the grinding stones and how they worked.

After the whole process was explained in English by one of the group leaders and several members had taken a turn at turning the grinding stones, the village staff quickly put out dishes of tofu for all the guests to try. This was not tofu that we made though, as the actual process is hard and time consuming work.

We hope to see you out and about in our Colorful Daegu and if you happen to see us, please say HI! If you would like to see more of Min Hee’s activities, please visit her facebook page and give her a LIKE (thumbs up)! Here is a link: https://www.facebook.com/whereisminhee/

Life in Daegu : Seomun Night Market Food Judging - for new vendors of Seomun night market.

Seomun Night Market Food Judging

In order to keep thing fair with choosing food vendors for the Seomun Night Market offerings, members of the community were asked to help city and market officials in choosing what foods to add to the list in the future.  I was given a suggestion to sign up and take part.  It was an amazing behind-the –scenes look at how the community can be part of the decision making process.  We gathered together and were briefed on the procedures.  One of the most important things to remember…… DO NOT EAT TOO MUCH!

After the briefing we left the tables and the staff quickly converted the desks to tasting tables for 30 different foods in the first round.  Yep!  There were 60 different foods to be tasted.  Well, we had to try 15 at a minimum!  What a task!  Wow!  The colors and smells were amazing.

These were edible treats that looked like real flowers and plants.  I took a lot of pictures this day, but, we can only display a few photos.  So to the vendors who I was unable to post photos of your dishes I apologize.

After we were allowed to take photos, we wound around the room trying foods.  The initial briefer said something that was quite funny.  He was trying to describe what we would be seeing.  He said “new foods”, then backtracked and said “Fusion” foods, then, he backtracked and said “Just try the different food, but not too much!”  After the first round of thirty foods, we waited in the hallway for staff to clean up the room and for the next group of thirty foods to be judged.

Again there were beautiful displays of dishes.  Everything from traditional street foods with a little twist, to make them something special, to more exotic dishes was on display.  It really was not easy to choose.  I tried to pick a wide variety of foods I thought would be popular.

It was nice to be offered an opportunity to have a say in what will be offered in the future.  I really hope that the vendors are happy with what they did for our taste testing. They should all be proud of their hard work.  It was a great turn out and let’s hope we see some of these vendors when the new menus are looked and the votes are counted.  I look forward to having some of the new dishes with my family at Daegu’s very own Seomun Market Night Market!

Disclaimer: The foods pictured here are random dishes I took photos of and not necessarily foods I tasted or voted on.  Nor is this post suggesting these foods are or should be on the list of new items to be offered.
